Richard Lopez is the Huntsville Regional Coordinator for Bridges To Life, coordinating projects at the Wynne Unit and Holliday Unit in Hunstville. Richard was an advocate for Bridges To Life during his time as the Director of Chaplaincy at TDCJ, and served as a member of the Bridges To Life Board of Directors before becoming a staff member.
Richard began volunteering in 1983 at the Central Unit (now closed) in Sugarland, Texas. In 1990, he was hired as a Catholic Chaplain with the Texas Department of Corrections (now known as the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-TDCJ). In 1996, Richard was promoted to Regional Chaplain and, in 2006, he was named the first Director of Chaplaincy Support. One of his many duties in this role was to develop and implement Faith Based Dorms within the existing prisons in Texas. During his tenure, Faith Based Dorms were implemented in 64 State of Texas prisons. Richard also oversaw the execution process, which he recalls as being the most difficult thing he has ever done for the Lord in his life.
Richard retired from TDCJ in August of 2012 and continues to be active in prison ministry. In addition to recruiting volunteers for the Bridges To Life program in the Conroe/Hunstville area, he works for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Office of Correctional Ministries, as Coordinator of Northern Prison Units. In this role, he is responsible for raising awareness in Catholic Communities concerning Correctional Ministries,and for recruiting and training volunteers to provide Catholic presence and teachings, including Catholic Worship services, in TDCJ prisons, jails and detention centers North of Downtown Houston.
Richard is a permanent Deacon assigned to St. Thomas Catholic Church in Huntsville, Texas and a board member with Restorative Justice Ministries Network of Texas. Richard and his wife Mary have been married 50 years and have been blessed with four daughters and four grandchildren. Richard has experienced the true repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation and love of God through the men and women involved in Bridges To Life.
