THE VITAL SPARK
While we're all familiar with the Biblical saying that the most important virtues in life are Faith, Hope, and Love, prisons are places that so often lack all three. Hope in particular is a desperate and essential need for incarcerated men and women.
We recently came across an interview of Dr. Karl Menninger, the influential American psychiatrist, in which he referred to Hope as "the vital spark":
"Deficiency of hope is despair and leads to decay. As severe as that may sound, it’s true. Hopelessness breeds hopelessness. But the opposite is also true—hope breeds hope. Hope is a tender flame that must be tended to in our lives to ward against disillusion and destructiveness."
